What is an Orc?

Orcs are a race of humanoids featured in Dungeons & Dragons since the game's inception. They are typically depicted as large, muscular creatures with mostly gray skin and tusks, which are actually teeth and faces resembling boars. In 5e, orcs are described as a “fiercely tribal” race that is “prone to violence and destruction.” Orcs tend to be chaotic evil in alignment, though some might be neutral.

In D&D campaigns, orcs can be used as villains or allies, depending on the situation. In addition, they can be powerful combatants as allies due to their strength and ferocity. Therefore, players should take care when creating an orc character to ensure that they have a balanced set of abilities that will make them effective both in combat and role-playing scenarios.

Orcs are considered an adult once they are 11 years old and can weigh about 100-130 kg with an average height of over 6 ft, having an average lifespan of 50 years. Their size is medium, but their body is way too buffed compared to humans. Orcs have a walking speed of 30 ft.

Orc Culture and History

Orcs are typically depicted as large, muscular humanoids with mostly shades of gray skin. These tusks are actually their teeth and resemble the face of a pig. Orcs are famous for being fierce warriors and value strength and courage above all else.

Strengths:

  • Physically, orcs possess incredible strength, endurance, and resilience.
  • Orcs have Darkvision, allowing them to see in the dark up to 60 feet away, in dim light, or even in complete darkness.
  • Orcs can move up to their speed while hearing or seeing a hostile creature. This ability of orcs is called Aggression.
  • Orcs can intimidate their opponents in combat due to their size and ferocity.

Weaknesses:

  • Reckless and impulsive in battle can lead to mistakes that can be exploited by their enemies.
  • They are easily distracted by shiny objects or loud noises, making them vulnerable to ambushes or traps.

Creating an Orc Character

When creating an orc character, you have the choice of several subraces, including Goblin-Orcs, Dwarf-Orcs, Orogs, Tanarukks, and Gray Orcs. Each subrace has its own unique abilities and traits that can be used to customize your orc character.

Choosing an Orc Subrace

When choosing an orc subrace for your character, there are several factors to consider.

SubraceBonusRole
Goblin-Orcs+2 Dexterity and StrengthAgility and Cunning
Dwarf-Orcs+2 Strength and +1 ConstitutionStrength and Resilience
Orogs+6 Strength, +2 Charisma, and ConstitutionWarriors
Tanarukks+2 Strength, +4 Constitution, and +1 CharismaSpellcasters or Leaders
Gray Orcs+2 Strength and WisdomWisdom or Insight

When selecting an orc subrace for your character, it is essential to consider the strengths and weaknesses of each subrace to create a balanced character that can effectively contribute to the party. Additionally, it is necessary to consider the role you want your character to play in the game; some subraces may be better suited for certain roles than others. Finally, it is important to consider the setting of your game; some subraces may be more or less appropriate depending on the world you're playing in. With careful consideration of these factors, you can choose an orc subrace that will help bring your character's story alive!

Orogs

Standing between 6 and 8 feet tall and with an average of 6'8″, Orogs are larger and more muscular than other orcs, with thick skin and a powerful build. Orogs have dark gray skin, huge pale eyes, and long, pointed ears. They are known for their strength, ferocity in battle, and skill with weapons. Orogs, throughout the ages, have come to learn to forge weapons and armor.

Orogs have a +6 bonus to Strength and Constitution scores, Darkvision up to 60 feet, proficiency in Intimidation and Athletics skills, resistance to poison damage, and access to the Relentless Endurance racial trait, which allows them to regain 1 hit point when they drop to 0 hit points but not die outright, and access to the Savage Attacks racial trait which allows them to roll an additional damage die when they score a critical hit with a melee weapon attack.

Orogs are best suited for classes that rely on the strength and physical prowess, such as Barbarians, Fighters, or Paladins. When creating an Orog party, it is important to ensure that each character has a unique role within the group and consider how each character's abilities can be used in tandem with one another for maximum effectiveness.

When using Orogs, it is crucial to remember that they are fierce warriors who will fight to the death if necessary but can also be reasoned with if given the right incentive. With their natural affinity for martial weapons such as swords, axes, and maces; their Darkvision; their proficiency in Intimidation; their resistance to poison damage– Orogs make formidable allies or enemies depending on how you choose to use them.

Tanarukks

Tanarukks appeared as stocky orcs with bristly hair and goiters, horns, and ridges along the sides of their heads. Their skin tones were predominantly between grayish green and dub brown. They had razor-sharp incisors and tusks jutting out from plump lower jaws. Tanarukks stand out from other orcs in both appearance and power. Tanarukks have an innate magical ability that allows them to cast spells without needing material components, making them formidable opponents in combat. They were deceitful, brutish, and not too intelligent, however smarter than an average orc.

Tanarukks are typically found living in large tribes or clans in harsh environments such as mountains or deserts. They have a strong connection to the demonic forces of the Abyss. However, they do not have any favorite climate and can be found living anywhere. Tanarukks can be chaotic or rarely lawful but are usually chaotic by nature.

Creating a Tanarukk Character:

Tanarukks have access to several racial abilities that make them powerful characters, including:

  • Darkvision
  • Passive Perception
  • Damage Resistance (Fire and Poison)
  • Magic and Spell Resistance
  • Manipulate Fire

It is essential to consider how best to use these abilities to maximize their effectiveness in combat and role-playing situations. Finally, it is important to consider how best to build an effective party around your Tanarukk character so that they can make the most of their strengths and abilities.

Gray Orcs

Gray Orcs are a powerful and formidable force. Physically larger and more muscular than other orcs, they have gray skin and black or gray hair. Their natural affinity for strength and endurance makes them excellent warriors. Gray orcs and their descendants were just as barbaric and violent as other orcs. Still, they lacked the skill needed to conquer and enslave others. They relied on their instincts and hearts instead of logic. They were inclined to act on their feelings and act impulsively when confronting their enemies. If given the opportunity to win against a hated rival, a gray orc did not hesitate, even if that rival had already beaten them multiple times.

Gray Orcs are known in the battle for their ferocity, often using overwhelming force to achieve victory; Gray Orcs prefer to wear light armor in war, as it allows them to be relatively unhindered and use their superior ability to move in battle. They also employ cunning tactics such as ambushes and surprise attacks to gain an advantage over their enemies. Gray orcs mastered the longbow and great axe since childhood, training with these weapons. Gray orcs regarded their axes as sacred items and spent considerable time maintaining them in good condition. Their axes frequently boasted gaudy jewels, feathers, beads, and other enemy body parts.  Gray orcs lived in small tribes comprising almost 50 individuals, led by a single individual, the chieftain, whose most important task was deciding when to attack an enemy tribe. The chieftain's function was primarily a titular one, as the chieftains were commonly eliminated not long after assuming the title.

When creating a Gray Orc character, it is important to consider how their unique abilities can be used most effectively. These include:

  • Increased strength and speed, which can be used for melee combat or quick escapes
  • Darkvision, which can be used for scouting out areas
  • Proficiency in Intimidation checks, which can be used for intimidating enemies or persuading NPCs
  • Blood fury, their own blood smell in the middle of a fight, enrages them.

With these abilities at your disposal, you'll have all the tools necessary to unleash the power of Gray Orcs.

Choosing an Orc Class

In addition to their racial bonuses, orc bards also have access to various musical instruments, which they can use to cast spells or support their allies. Finally, Orc bards can also use racial bonuses to charm and deceive their enemies. Druid

Orcs make excellent druids due to their natural affinity for nature. Druids have the ability to shape-shift into powerful animal forms as well as some plants. Druids are also adept in a primal magic spell. When playing an orc druid, it is essential to focus on the strengths of your chosen subclass while also taking advantage of your orc's natural abilities.

Subclasses:

  • Circle of the Land: Grants druids access to additional spells based on the environment they are in. Druids also obtain the ability of Natural Recovery.
  • Circle of the Moon: Grants druids access to additional shape-shifting abilities and additional combat options. You can use Wild Shape on your turn as a bonus action rather than an action. This allows them to take on powerful enemies in close combat while using their cunning and intelligence to outwit them.
  • Circle of Dreams: Grants druids access to additional healing, illusion spells, and other utility options. This allows them to support their allies in battle and provides various options for dealing with different types of enemies. In addition, the druid is now a walking reservoir of energy and also has the ability to walk in dreamlands.
  • Circle of Spores: Grants druids a symbiotic link to fungus, and their ability to tap into the cycle of life and death grants them access to certain spells. Druids also have access to spreading spores which can inflict damage when triggered.

Fighters also have access to various martial maneuvers, allowing orcs to use their strength and agility to their advantage in combat. In addition, Fighters have access to special abilities such as Action Surge and Second Wind, which can be used to great effect by orcs.

Fighters also have access to a variety of archetypes, such as

  • Champion
  •  Battle Master
  • Eldritch Knight.

The Champion archetype is particularly well-suited for orcs, as it allows them to use their natural strength and resilience. The Battle Master archetype is also well-suited for orcs, as it will enable them to use their martial prowess. Finally, the Eldritch Knight archetype is also a good choice for orcs, as it allows them to combine their martial prowess with magical abilities.

Monk

Monks are a martial class that specializes in unarmed combat and agility. With their Unarmored Defense feature, they can use their Wisdom modifier instead of their Dexterity modifier when calculating their AC. Monks also have access to the Martial Arts feature, which allows them to use their unarmed strikes as weapons and deal 1d4 damage.

Paladin

Paladins are a powerful martial class specializing in protecting the weak and upholding justice. They are proficient in all armor, shields, and simple and martial weapons, allowing them to be effective on the battlefield. In addition, paladins have access to Divine Smite, which enables them to deal extra radiant damage with their weapon attacks. This makes them particularly effective against undead and fiends.

Paladins also have access to Divine Sense, which allows them to detect evil and good creatures within 60 feet of them, which are not totally hidden. This can be useful for scouting out enemies or finding allies in need of assistance. Finally, paladins also have access to Lay on Hands, which allows them to heal themselves or an ally by expending hit points. This ability can be a last resort when no other healing options are available. Still, it can't be used on constructs or undead.

Paladins also have access to Divine Health, which grants them immunity to disease. This is especially useful for adventurers who may find themselves in dangerous environments where the disease is rampant. This can help keep your party focused during tense situations or when facing powerful foes. Finally, paladins also have access to Channel Divinity; your Oath allows you to channel divine energy into magical effects. A Paladin who breaks the Oath is known asan Oathbreaker.

Ranger

Rangers are a martial class that focuses on ranged combat and exploration of the wilderness. Orcs make excellent Rangers due to their natural strength, agility, and ability to see in the dark (Darkvision). The Ranger class has two main archetypes: the Hunter and the Beast Master. The Hunter archetype focuses on ranged combat, while the Beast Master archetype focuses on taming and controlling animals.

Both archetypes have access to spells, but the Hunter has access to more offensive spells. In comparison, the Beast Master has access to more defensive spells. Rangers also have access to a variety of skills, such as:

When creating an orc Ranger character, it is essential to consider which archetype best suits your play style and how you want your character to fit into the party dynamic. It is also important to consider which skills you want your character to focus on and which spells you want them to have access to. Orcs can use their racial traits, such as Relentless Endurance and Savage Attacks, for great effect when playing a Ranger.

Additionally, it is important to consider how your character's race will affect their interactions with other characters in the game as orcs are often seen as violent or untrustworthy by other races, so it is crucial for players creating an orc Ranger character to consider how their character will react when faced with prejudice or hostility from other characters.

Rogue

The Uncanny Dodge feature allows them to halve any damage from an attack they can see coming. Sorcerer

Sorcerers are a powerful and versatile class for orcs. They have access to a variety of spells, including offensive spells such as fireballs and lightning bolts, as well as defensive spells such as shields and counterspells. Sorcerers also have access to unique abilities that make them stand out from other classes, such as the ability to cast spells without using material components and the ability to cast spells at higher levels than other classes.

Sorcerers use weapons such as Darts, Daggers, Slings, Quarterstaffs, and Light Crossbows, and these can even empower their spellcasting abilities.

These abilities make sorcerers an ideal choice for players who enjoy playing spellcasters and want to make the most of their magical abilities. However, it is important to remember that sorcerers are not as durable as other classes, so they should be played carefully and cautiously. When creating an orc sorcerer party, it is vital to ensure that each member has a role that complements the others. For example, a party with two sorcerers should include one specializing in offensive spells and one specializing in defensive spells.

It is also essential to consider how each character's unique abilities can be used together to create powerful combinations. For example, an orc sorcerer could use their illusion magic to create distractions. In contrast, another character uses their offensive magic to take out enemies. Finally, it is essential to remember that orcs are naturally aggressive and tend to be more reckless than other races. As such, players must consider how their orc sorcerer's actions will affect the rest of the party before taking any risks. Nevertheless, with careful planning and consideration of each character's strengths and weaknesses, orc sorcerers can be a powerful force on the battlefield!

Building an Effective Orc Party

Creating an effective orc party is essential for any successful Dungeons & Dragons campaign. Orcs are diverse, with each subrace possessing unique abilities and strengths. Therefore, when building an orc party, it is essential to ensure that each character is optimized for their role and that the party composition is balanced.

Subrace Strengths:

  • Goblin-Orcs are small and agile, making them ideal for scouting and infiltration. Therefore, they should focus on stealth and agility when selecting feats and spells.
  • Dwarf-Orcs are strong and hardy, making them great front-line fighters. Therefore, they should focus on strength and power when selecting feats.
  • Orogs are powerful warriors capable of dealing massive amounts of damage in combat.
  • Tanarukks are fierce combatants, able to use their natural weapons and magical powers to great effect.
  • Gray Orcs are great fearless warriors who can fight opponents in battle.

It is also important to remember that orcs are not just mindless brutes; they have their own culture and history that can be explored in the game. Players should take the time to learn about orc culture and incorporate it into their characters' backstories and role-playing. This will help bring depth to the game and provide players with a better understanding of how orcs think and act in different situations. By taking the time to understand orc culture, players can create a more immersive experience for themselves as well as their fellow players.

Using Orcs in a 5e Campaign

With their natural strength, ferocity, and adaptability, orcs make excellent melee fighters, ranged attackers, spellcasters, and support characters. When creating an orc character, it is important to consider their subrace and the unique abilities each one brings to the table.

Orc Tactics and Strategies

Orcs are a powerful and versatile race, capable of adapting to any situation. In combat, orcs excel in both melee and ranged combat, making them formidable opponents. Orcs also have a natural affinity for magic, allowing them to effectively use spells. Therefore, creating an orc party is essential to create a balanced group with different roles and abilities.

In Battle:

  • Use their unique abilities, such as their natural strength and resilience.
  • Come up with creative strategies that take advantage of their strengths and weaknesses.
  • Focus on using ranged attacks while another focuses on melee combat or vice versa.
  •

Role-playing an Orc Character:

  • Remember that they are not mindless brutes but rather complex individuals with their own motivations and goals.
  • Remember that orcs have their own culture and history, which should be respected when role-playing them.
  • Understand the nuances of orc culture to create more interesting characters.

Common Orc Enemies

Orcs are a common enemy in 5e campaigns and come in various shapes and sizes. The most common type of orc is the Goblin-Orc, a hybrid of goblin and orc. They are typically smaller than other orcs but possess great strength and ferocity. Dwarf-Orcs are a hybrid of dwarf and orc and are usually smaller than other orcs. They are known for their strength, resilience, and ability to wield powerful weapons. Finally, Orogs are a type of orc that is larger and more powerful than others. They are known for their strength, ferocity, and ability to wield powerful weapons.

Tanarukks are a type of orc that is larger and more powerful than other orcs. They have an affinity for fire and can use it to devastating effect in combat. Gray Orcs are a type of orc smaller than others but still possess great strength and ferocity. They are known for their stealthy tactics, as well as their ability to blend into the shadows. They are great wielders of weapons!

Strategies for Facing Orcs:

When facing off against orcs, creating a balanced party with characters that can cover each other's weaknesses is vital. It is also essential to develop strategies that take advantage of the strengths of each character in the party, such as using ranged attacks to keep enemies at bay. In contrast, melee characters move in for the kill.

Additionally, it is essential to be aware of the various abilities that orcs possess, such as their natural armor or aggression. Finally, it is important to remember that orcs can be reasoned with if approached in the right way, so it may be beneficial to try diplomacy before resorting to violence.
